“You've probably heard the saying, "There are no atheists in foxholes." Yup. When the crisis is on, watch people get religious. We must be sure that we are praying not only in the tough times, but when things are easy and life is good. Elder Howard W. Hunter said: If prayer is only a spasmodic cry at the time of crisis, then it is utterly selfish, and we come to think of God as a repairman or a service agency to help us only in our emergencies. (John Bytheway)
Daily Focus Scriptures to mark and ponder:
Helaman 10:7 - "Behold, I give unto you (Nephi) power, that whatsoever ye shall seal on earth shall be sealed in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven; and thus shall ye have power among this people."
Helaman 11:4 - "O Lord, do not suffer that this people shall be destroyed by the sword; but o Lord, rather let there be a famine in the land, to stir them up in remembrance of the Lord their God, and perhaps they will repent and turn unto thee.
Helaman 11:6 - "...For the earth was smitten that it was dry and they did not yield forth grain in the season of grain;...even among the Lamanites as well as among the Nephites, that they did perish by thousands in the more wicked parts of the land." (Notice it lasts for 3 years)
Hel. 12:1-3 - "And thus we can behold ….. Yea, and we may see ….. And thus we see that except the Lord doth chasten his people with many afflictions, yea, except he doth visit them with death and with terror, and with famine and with all manner of pestilence, they will not remember him."
Daily Questions: What an endorsement! The Lord promised Nephi the power to do anything, because he knew that Nephi would hearken and hold fast to the word of God, no matter what happened. The Lord knew that Nephi was utterly reliable, and so Nephi became absolutely free. Parents, can you imagine a situation in which you might say to one of your children, without any reservation, “you can do anything you want to do”?

Food for Thought:
The Nephites had likely gotten used to warfare as it was so common place among them. The famine had a greater effect in bringing the people to a repentant and humble state. “Famine is one of heaven's most eloquent sermons. When virtually all else has failed to get the attention of the rebellious and turn them to God, famines have succeeded. Famines can strip men of every sense of self-sufficiency and turn their eyes and ears to the voice of heaven. In this story it seems that Nephi felt that the people simply did not see the connection between devastating war and their sinful ways.” (McConkie and Millet, Doctrinal Commentary on the Book of Mormon, vol. 3, p. 390)
