Day 44 - Alma 46-48

Spiritual Thought:
"It is not sufficient that the Book of Mormon be [just physically] in our homes; its principles must be captured in our minds and hearts. Through consistent reading, prayerful pondering, and conscientious application, its teachings will become an essential part of the fabric of our lives. "What does the Book of Mormon mean to you? Has it been a source of inspiration and power in your life? Will it continue to be? "If you have not yet drunk deeply from this fountain of pure truth, with all of my soul I encourage you to do so now. Don’t let the consistent study of the Book of Mormon be one of the things that you intend to do but never quite accomplish. Begin today. "I bear witness that it can become a personal ‘Urim and Thummim’ in your life".
(Elder Richard G. Scott: "The Power of the Book of Mormon in My Life," Ensign, Oct. 1984, 11).

Food for Thought:  Spiritual Lessons from the War Chapters (experpts from John Bytheway)

Chapter 46-47 – Don’t Come Down from Your Mountain!
  1. Kings lead to bondage.
  2. Place reminders of your covenants everywhere.
“We too can place reminders of our covenants everywhere.  President Spencer W. Kimball counseled families to display pictures of the temple (and our Savior)  in their homes to remind youth of their goal to be temple worthy and to remind parents of their temple covenants.  The way we dress, the way we talk, the modern media with which we surround ourselves should all be reminders and supporters of our covenants.  As someone once said, ‘Be careful how you act-you may be the only standard work some people will ever read!”
  3. Don’t come down from your mountain.  Stand ye in holy places, and be not moved.”
  4. Beware of “little” temptations that trick you into thinking, “I’m still in control.”   Satan poisons by degree too.
  5. Beware of “friends” who tempt you.
  6. Think of Amalickiah as a Type of Satan - it's pretty hard to miss.  Amalickiah’s rise to power and his escape from Nephite society remind us of Satan’s power play and expulsion in the premortal life.
Alma 48 – Make Covenants, Then Make Swords
48:17 “…if all men …ever would be, like unto Moroni, behold, the very powers of hell would have been shaken forever; yea, the devil would never have power over the hearts of the children of men.”
  1. Spiritual preparation is our first priority.  Temporal preparation is also important, but we must get our spiritual lives in order first.
  2. The Christian’s attitude toward war should be sorrow and reluctance.
